our people

The Palawa story is one of sustainability and wellness, violent upheaval and resistance, survival, strength, healing and excellence.

Nine nations made up of 48 Ancestral groups were thriving in Lutruwita at the time of British invasion, in 1803. The cultures and comprehensive knowledge systems of these collectives have been developing here since time immemorial.

Against all odds the community today remains connected to each other, to Country and to their Ancestors through cultural practices and self-determination. wukalina Walk provides opportunities for the strengthening of these connections.

The Country of the North East Nation is the ideal place for the Palawa story to be shared as our community are connected to and descend from that area and, more recently, from Tayaritja (Bass Strait Islands). On wukalina Walk you will learn about our connections to those islands today.
